The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has impounded about 700 vehicles in the Western Region as part of a special operation targeting the illegal use of sirens, beacon lights and strobe lights.
The exercise, conducted in Takoradi and Tarkwa, also resulted in the removal of unauthorised beacon and strobe lights from vehicles, as well as the seizure of seven illegally installed sirens.
The operation forms part of a nationwide enforcement of Regulations 65 and 74 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which restrict the use of sirens, beacon lights and strobe lights to the President, specified state officials and authorised emergency service institutions.
Speaking to the media, the Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police MTTD, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, said the operation was necessary because many motorists continue to flout the law.
He cautioned chiefs, politicians, pastors, business owners and other members of the public against installing or using prohibited emergency lights and sirens on their vehicles.
According to him, the illegal use of such equipment poses a danger to other road users and contributes to road crashes.
ACP Obeng further disclosed that the enforcement exercise would continue daily in Takoradi and Tarkwa and is also being carried out in other parts of the country.
