Ministry Vows: Trailer Driver Pays Every Cedi for Dzorwulu Bridge Fix

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has vowed to hold accountable the driver responsible for crashing a trailer into the North Dzorwulu Pedestrian Footbridge, insisting he will shoulder the full GHC2.5 million repair cost. Officials confirmed the driver’s arrest, with him now in police custody as investigations proceed. This incident, which occurred recently, has sparked safety fears among local residents and commuters who rely on the bridge.

Nasir Ahmed Yartey, Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ministry, assured the public that authorities are firmly in control. “The issue has come to our attention, and the culprit has been apprehended. The police are in full control, and we are dealing with it,  Yartey stated. He emphasized that engineers from the Ghana Highway Authority had swiftly conducted an emergency inspection, identifying localised structural damage from the impact.

Yartey detailed that repair estimates stand at approximately GHC2.5 million, with the driver mandated to fund the entire process. “We are going to ensure that this is done,” he added firmly. The Ministry anticipates activating the repair schedule soon, projecting completion within about six days to minimize disruptions.

The crash left visible cracks on the bridge, shifting sections of the structure and damaging fittings, raising immediate safety concerns. Pedestrians and residents in the area have voiced urgency for rapid restoration, warning of potential accidents during the works. This event underscores ongoing challenges with heavy vehicle compliance on Ghanaian roads, prompting calls for stricter enforcement to protect vital infrastructure like pedestrian footbridges.
