ACCRA, Ghana, 11th May: The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has outlined three basic requirements applicants must meet to benefit from support under the Fund.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, 2026, Madam Obuobia explained that concerns had been raised by many Ghanaians about how to access assistance under the scheme.
According to her, to qualify for support under the Trust Fund, an applicant must be a Ghanaian citizen, possess an active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card, and be diagnosed with a medical condition that falls within the approved conditions covered by the Fund.
She further clarified that patients cannot walk directly into the Secretariat to apply for support, stressing that the process has been designed to be digital, structured, and dignified.
“Applications are initiated by specialist clinicians at our enlisted hospitals through a dedicated digital platform,” she explained.
Madam Obuobia disclosed that the Patient Support Programme will initially be rolled out through 29 enlisted hospitals strategically located across the country to ensure equitable access to healthcare support for all Ghanaians.

6. Sunyani Teaching Hospital

8. Greater Accra Regional Hospital
9. Eastern Regional Hospital
10. Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital
11. Volta Regional Hospital
12. Kumasi South Hospital
13. Northern Regional Hospital
14. Upper West Regional Hospital
15. Upper East Regional Hospital
16. Sefwi Wiawso Government Hospital
17. Goaso Municipal Hospital
18. Bole Municipal Hospital
19. Worawora Government Hospital
20. Holy Family Hospital
21. Baptist Medical Centre
22. University of Ghana Medical Centre
23. 37 Military Hospital
24. International Maritime Hospital
25. The Bank Hospital
26. Trust Specialist Hospital
27. Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital
28. Aisha Hospital
29. St Michael’s Specialist Hospital
She noted that the distribution of the facilities across the country is intended to ensure fairness and improve access to specialised healthcare services for patients battling chronic non-communicable diseases.
