Limited Registration Exercise: The first day of registration was a disaster in the Volta Region – James Gunu

James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shared his dismay over the rocky start of the limited registration exercise in the Volta Region. He expressed that the Electoral Commission (EC) had assured a prompt commencement of the registration, but this promise was not upheld in Volta.

Mr. Gunu highlighted issues like network difficulties and tardiness in delivering materials to polling stations as significant obstacles that the EC must confront before the 2024 general elections.

The limited voter registration finally commenced after midday, a hiccup caused by a nationwide system failure. Many registration centers, mostly located in EC district offices, experienced low turnout as potential registrants had departed due to the delayed start.

Before the registration’s kick-off, chaos and frustration reigned at the centers due to malfunctioning systems. This compelled the EC to convene a high-level technical meeting to address the problem.

Throughout the country, eager registrants endured hours of uncertainty and inconvenience as they waited for the registration process to begin. Technical glitches were blamed for the delays, prompting some prospective registrants in Accra to leave without completing the process.

Mr. Gunu, speaking on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s morning show ‘AdeKyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, accused the EC of deliberately impeding registration efforts. He criticized the EC for neglecting necessary precautions.
