Let’s work hard to control tribal conflicts —- Anthony Acquaye

The intra-tribal conflict and communal clashes has to be control as a matter of urgency to save lives and property been lost through this frequent misunderstanding between families and clans as a result of minor issues, traditions and festivals.
The security Policy Expert at the Centre for Security and Dialogue Anthony Acquaye disclosed this on Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahortor 92.3 FM hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.
He said intra-tribal and tribal conflict is one of the major challenges the country must pay attention to by finding a strategic plan to stop it for recurring.
He reiterated that there are some unending conflicts in parts of the Volta and Oti regions and there is a need for detailed security and settlement road map to find a lasting solution to these problems. He was speaking to the Nkwanta South communal clashes over annual yam festivals in the Oti Region.
In another development, hundreds of residents in Nkwanta, Oti Region, have fled their homes following a renewed clash between the Adele, Challa, and Akyode tribes over disagreements regarding the performance of ritual rites related to the Akyodes’ 2023 annual yam festival.
According to reports from the Oti Region the Minister for the Interior has on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council and by the Executive Instrument imposed curfew on Nkwanta Township in the Oti Region from 5:00pm – 6:00am effective Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Meanwhile the Government wishes to appeal to all to exercise restraint and to use the established mechanisms for the resolution of all their conflicts and disputes.
In another vein the Government will like to reiterate that, there is a ban on all persons in Nkwanta Township and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
Several people have sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital in Nkwanta.
Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns about their safety amid the conflict and are calling for intervention from security agencies to bring the situation under control.
He said the curfew imposed is a temporary measure and call on the government to expedite an action plan to investigate into the primary cause to the conflict the has resulted to 13 been killed in the conflict.
