Let’s support C.K. Akonnor – Odartey Lamptey

Ex Black Stars striker Nii Odartey Lamptey has called on Ghanaians to support the current head coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Charles Kwablah Akonnor.

“The likes of Pep Guardiola, Stephen Keshie of blessed memory have all succeeded without any top coaching records, so why can’t Akonnor do same?”

According to the former FIFA U-17 Golden Ball winner, C.K Akonnor can only succeed if he gets the necessary support from all and sundry because the job is a difficult one.

“Having worked with him as an assistant coach at Eleven Wise in 2009, I believe he can do the job,” Odartey stated.

He added, “A lot of coaches have been given top jobs and have succeeded due to adequate support from all stakeholders.”

“The likes of Pep Guardiola, Stephen Keshie of blessed memory have all succeeded without any top coaching records, so why can’t Akonnor do same?” he asked.

He went on to say that, coach C.K Akonnor has coached almost all the big clubs in Ghana, Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, AshantiGold, etc so he believes the Black Stars job isn’t above him.

CK Akonnor was appointed the head coach of the Black Stars in January 2020 after former coach, James Akwesi Appiah’s contract expired. C.K is the second Ghanaian appointed to as coach of the Black Stars in recent times.

He was a made captain of the Black Stars after Abedi Pele but lost the captainship when he acquired German citizenship. He had 41 caps with the Black Stars.

Ghana have not won the African Cup of Nations since 1982 in Libya and were eliminated in the round of sixteen in the 2019 edition in Egypt.

C.K Akonnor is yet to coach in any official game for the Black Stars since his appointment in January this year.
