Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has criticised early discussions about the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) next flagbearer, urging party members to focus on delivering on their mandate rather than engaging in succession politics.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the NDC was elected to address Ghana’s challenges, not to begin campaigning for the 2028 general election barely two years into its administration.Ghana investment opportunities
She described premature discussions about the party’s future presidential candidate as a distraction that undermines the trust Ghanaians placed in the government.
Responding to a question about whether she intends to contest the NDC’s flagbearer position, the Vice President said the party’s future electoral success would depend on the government’s performance and the support it gives President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his mandate.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general election came after years of hard work and a demanding campaign despite limited financial resources.
“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president who’s leading the charge. And it depends on the quality of support we are giving.
“And if we are already going left or right, and centre and back, and it’s not even time, I think it’s a betrayal of the course of the people, and I don’t think it is right. So please help us to fulfill the dreams of this beautiful country. Let’s focus on getting the job done,” she said.
