Lets adhere to fire prevention methods –Ebenezer Yenzu

A staggering 1.6 million Ghana cedis has been lost to a fire incident in the Tema region. This financial setback underscores the critical importance of adhering to fire prevention methods in public, corporate, and industrial environments.

The Ghana Fire Service, having undergone significant transitions to prioritize safety and adopt best practices, has shifted its focus from fire prevention to fire management.

Ebenezer Yenzu, the Public Relations Officer of Tema DO III, shared these insights on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM, hosted by Citizen Kofi Owusu in Accra.

Yenzu emphasized the recent intensification of fire safety education by the service in schools, markets, corporate environments, and lorry stations, focusing on prevention and safety measures.

While acknowledging a quiet decrease in fire disasters over the past three years, DO III Ebenezer Yenzu stressed the ongoing need for concerted efforts to prevent and manage fire as a potential disaster, safeguarding both lives and property.

He advised the public to utilize the national fire service toll-free number for effective communication tools in fire prevention and management across the country.

Station Officer II Charles Andrew Eshun from the Regional Fire Safety Department highlighted the importance of understanding various types of fire extinguishers tailored to combat fires started with different fuels, known as ‘classes’ of fire. The choice of fire extinguishers, he noted, depends on the fire risk specific to each business premise.

Eshun urged the placement of toll-free numbers visibly and publicly in all premises to facilitate communication on potential fires that could pose threats to lives and property. Emphasizing the need for both prevention and management of fire incidents, he stressed that fires can occur anywhere, necessitating constant preparedness and awareness.

He reiterated the significance of knowing how to prevent fires at home to protect loved ones and property. While advocating for common safety measures like smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and escape plans, Eshun also highlighted some often-overlooked steps that individuals can take to enhance safety and potentially prevent fire hazards.

Amidst the variety of fire extinguisher types, both Water and Dry Powder extinguishers play crucial roles in fighting and preventing fires.
