L I on restricted imported goods will encourage corruption —Cudjoe Adukpo

Historically, Ghana has suffered from import substitution for our local consumables goods and importation serve as means to close the gap for our goods and services. And the introductions of Legislative Instrument (LI) before parliament has to be rejected outright not to create a shortage and monopoly for some few companies to make money. The L.I will compel importers of 22 restricted items, including poultry, rice, sugar, diapers and animal intestines (yemuadie) to seek licences from a committee to be set up by the minister.

The Member of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication team member, Cudjoe Adukpo said this on Simpieso political talk show on Ahotor 92.3 FM hosted by Emmanuel Amartey (Alaska De Don) in Accra.

He is of the view that, politically the system can be abused by political personal and political interest, where the government in power can regulate the license police to destroy its political rival business, and can adversely create exploitation of importers and exporters.

Cudjoe Adukpo is of the view that, there is a need for the government to come out with a policy to boost local production of our primary products to discourage huge importation of items listed to boost our weak cedi.

Touching on the 24 hour economy, he said the introduction of the policy is very laudable and timely looking at the ailing economy the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken Ghana to; the only way to close the poverty and unemployment gap is to adopt this policy as a game changer.

This he call for pragmatic policy on how to sustained constant supply of electricity power, tax holiday and effective security system to ensure safety around the clock for workers welfare and safety.

Speaking on the same platform the Director of Operations of ADAM GH Ibrahim Mumuni (BABS) said he is not surprise how major companies and stake holders in the import and export industry are in arms with the government not to pass the LI since it would just create another avenue for looting and corruption.

He called on the NDC members of parliament to fight hard to save the country and the economy to wrestle and vote against this LI not to see the light of the day.
