Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, Linda Akweley Obenewaa Ocloo, has called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector to transform waste management and sanitation across the Greater Accra Region.
According to her, addressing the region’s growing sanitation challenges requires a combination of investment, innovation, technology and effective public-private partnerships.
The Minister made the call after joining the newly appointed Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, on a working visit to key waste management facilities operated by the Jospong Group of Companies in the Greater Accra Region.
The delegation visited the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), the Achimota Waste Transfer Station and the Jamestown Waste Transfer Station, among other facilities, to assess infrastructure, technology and systems supporting waste collection, transfer, treatment, recycling and resource recovery.
Hon. Ocloo said the exercise provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss strategic investments and innovative approaches to improving waste management and service delivery.
She further stressed the need for stronger coordination among central government, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and private sector operators.
“Government must provide leadership. The private sector must bring investment and innovation. Our Assemblies must enforce the necessary standards and citizens must take ownership of the communities in which they live,” she stated.
The Regional Minister said Greater Accra remained committed to the “Keep Accra Clean” agenda, stressing that the initiative was a deliberate commitment to creating cleaner, healthier, safer and more dignified communities.
She said the sanitation challenges facing the region were significant but could be overcome if all stakeholders worked together and embraced modern technologies and sustainable solutions.
