John Mahama to scrap sanitation and other ministries after 2024.

John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced his intention to scrap the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources if he becomes president in 2025.

He made this statement during a Special Public Lecture at the Accra campus of the Wisconsin International University College on April 3, 2024.

Mahama emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive development strategy within the Water and Sanitation sector, suggesting that the ministry’s functions be integrated into the Local Government Ministry to streamline operations and reduce government expenditure.

He argued that the country was cleaner when sanitation was under the jurisdiction of local governments rather than being a standalone ministry.

Furthermore, Mahama proposed consolidating several other underperforming ministries, including the Aviation and Railways Ministries, into the Transport Ministry to optimize efficiency and reduce administrative costs.

He also mentioned merging the Communications and Information ministries to decrease the number of ministries overall.

Overall, Mahama’s proposal aims to restructure the government’s organizational framework to improve efficiency, reduce redundancy, and allocate resources more effectively within key sectors such as sanitation, transportation, and communication.
