If the Electoral Commission can’t safeguard Biometric Machines, how can we trust them to protect our votes? – APC Flagbearer

Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the Flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC), is urging the Ghana Police Service and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch a thorough investigation into the disappearance of seven Biometric Verification Machines from the Electoral Commission.

Expressing his disbelief at the notion that these vital machines could simply go missing, Dr. Ayariga emphasized the significance of these devices, likening them to heavy-duty equipment rather than easily misplaced items like pencils or pens.

7 Biometric Verification Machines are not pencils or pens to easily get missing or taken away by chance, these are gadgets, heavy-duty equipment that has weight, I don’t think that I want to believe that it is missing,” he told Citizen Kofi Owusu.

The disappearance of these biometric machines has raised serious concerns, particularly regarding the integrity of the upcoming December elections. The Minority in Parliament is calling for urgent action from law enforcement to address the situation promptly.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, stressed the importance of the CID and the Police Service swiftly locating the missing devices. He expressed worries about the potential implications of unknown individuals having these machines and questioned the motives behind their theft.

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Hassan Ayariga highlighted the critical role of the Electoral Commission in safeguarding the integrity of the voting process. He expressed grave concerns about the Commission’s ability to protect the votes of Ghanaians if it cannot even safeguard something as crucial as verification machines.

If they say it is missing then we are in danger, an office like the EC, if they can’t protect a verification machine, then how sure are we that they can protect our votes” he said.

In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Dr. Ayariga reiterated the need for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability and restore public trust in the electoral process. The security and transparency of Ghana’s elections must be upheld, and any incidents of equipment disappearance must be thoroughly addressed to maintain the credibility of the democratic process.
