Ibrahim express concern on exit of 18 NPP MPs; says it could threaten parliament’s capacity

The imminent NPP primaries carry significant implications for Ghana’s Parliament, warns Ahmed Ibrahim, the First Deputy Minority Whip.

With 18 incumbent NPP MPs opting out of re-election, the departure of seasoned lawmakers poses a considerable challenge in terms of institutional memory and expertise.

Ahmed Ibrahim expressed concern over the parallel with the recent NDC primaries, where 18 MPs were also replaced, emphasizing the worrisome trend of experienced legislators exiting Parliament.

He specifically highlighted the departure of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, mentored by the legendary JH Mensah, as a potential setback for Parliament’s capacity.

Ibrahim argued that the government’s failure to fully utilize experienced MPs contributes to their decision to leave.
Citing examples like Joe Ghartey and Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, he pointed out their untapped potential and lack of meaningful roles within the government.

Ibrahim urged the government to take proactive measures to retain and leverage the expertise of experienced MPs, stressing the importance of recognizing their contributions and providing roles that utilize their skills and knowledge.
