ACCRA, Ghana, 14th: President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to religious tolerance and equal treatment for all Ghanaians, regardless of their religious beliefs.
He said his responsibility as President requires him to serve Christians, Muslims, adherents of traditional African religions and citizens who do not profess any faith without discrimination.
Speaking at the opening of the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, President Mahama stressed that fairness and respect for religious diversity must remain central to his leadership.
“My responsibility as President demands fairness, respect and equal concern for all,” he said.
The President acknowledged that some Christian leaders had questioned his faith because of decisions he had taken to ensure fairness towards people of other religious backgrounds.
He maintained, however, that his constitutional responsibility to every Ghanaian must take precedence over religious considerations.
President Mahama described Ghana’s religious diversity as one of the country’s most precious possessions, urging citizens to continue nurturing relationships that allow people of different faiths to live, work and support one another peacefully.
He disclosed that the issue is personal to him because he comes from a multi-faith family and has siblings who are Muslims.
According to him, differences in religious beliefs have not affected the love and affection shared among members of his family.
“Our different religions do not affect the love and affection that we share as people of the same bloodline,” he stated.
President Mahama further called on churches to promote honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace while maintaining the moral independence to speak against injustice and suffering.
He said religious institutions has an important role to play in strengthening national cohesion and encouraging citizens to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
The 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship has brought together more than 10,000 participants from different countries under the theme, “Commissioned, One Mandate, Every Nation.”
