The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has urged electrical dealers in Accra to prioritise public safety over profit by ensuring that only certified and quality-assured electrical products are sold on the Ghanaian market.
The Authority warned that the continued circulation of substandard, counterfeit and defective electrical products poses serious risks to consumers, property and communities, and could contribute to fire outbreaks and electrical accidents across the country.
According to the GSA, electrical dealers have a responsibility to comply with national standards by stocking and selling only approved products. It cautioned businesses against dealing in unsafe electrical appliances and accessories that could endanger consumers and erode confidence in the market.
The Authority further warned that dealers found selling unapproved or substandard electrical products would face sanctions in accordance with the law.
It said enforcement measures would be strengthened to ensure compliance and protect consumers from the dangers associated with unsafe electrical products.
The GSA also urged members of the public to purchase electrical appliances and accessories only from authorised dealers and to check for approved certification marks before making purchases.
Consumers were advised to ensure that electrical products meet the required safety and quality standards before using them.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying market surveillance, inspections and enforcement activities across the country to remove substandard electrical products from circulation.
It stressed that cooperation between dealers, consumers and regulatory authorities remains essential to promoting electrical safety and reducing preventable fires and accidents in Ghana.
