ACCRA, Ghana, 23rd August: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain focused and resist what he describes as attempts by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to distract the government from delivering on its mandate.
According to Mr. Koomson, the sustained attacks by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, should be viewed as a broader political strategy aimed at undermining the NDC government.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, August 22, Mr. Koomson argued that the real target of the Minority Leader’s actions was not Sammy Gyamfi as an individual, but the NDC as a political party.
“The target of Afenyo-Markin is not Sammy Gyamfi. The target is to run down the NDC,” he said.
He interpreted the Minority Leader’s criticisms of GoldBod and its management as part of an effort to divert public attention and create political pressure around the government’s economic programmes.
His comments come amid growing controversy over the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), with the NPP Minority in Parliament demanding greater accountability over losses reportedly associated with the programme.
The Minority has argued that GoldBod should account for losses linked to the DGPP rather than taking credit for gains from the programme while distancing itself from reported transaction-related losses.
The controversy follows an August 2026 report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which indicated that the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme recorded losses exceeding US$1.7 billion in 2025, equivalent to approximately 1.5 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
However, GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has rejected claims that GoldBod itself incurred the reported losses, insisting that the figures should not be attributed to the institution.
Mr. Koomson subsequently cautioned the NDC against allowing the controversy to derail the government’s agenda.
He urged the government and its officials to remain focused on their policies and programmes, warning that the NPP could use what he described as political propaganda to distract the administration and weaken public confidence in its work.
He further called on the NDC to be vigilant and avoid giving the opposition an opportunity to regain political ground through what he described as attempts to create unnecessary distractions.
According to him, the government must concentrate on delivering on its promises to Ghanaians rather than becoming overly preoccupied with attacks from the opposition.
