The Ghana Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACOFA) has formally requested an urgent meeting with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to discuss strategies for sustaining cocoa producer prices while safeguarding government revenue amid declining global prices.
In a letter signed by the Association’s National President, Stephenson Anane Boateng, the group indicated that the meeting would focus on “innovative ways” to maintain the current producer price levels despite volatility on the international market.
According to the Association, world cocoa prices dropped significantly within the first month of the year – falling from $6,050.30 per tonne on January 1, 2026, to $4,165.00 by January 31. Meanwhile, Ghana’s producer price remains pegged at $5,850 per tonne, creating a deficit of about $1,685 per tonne that could pose challenges for government financing of the sector.
The Association warned that the situation could worsen further due to reports of excess cocoa harvests from La Côte d’Ivoire, which may exert additional downward pressure on global prices.
GNACOFA noted that it had anticipated the risks associated with falling world prices and had developed policy proposals, backed by sector experts, which it intends to present to the Finance Ministry for consideration.
The Association also emphasized its willingness to support the government during challenging economic periods, stressing that although it has historically opposed policies deemed unfavourable to farmers, its leadership remains committed to constructive engagement in the national interest.
Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board(COCOBOD) and the General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour in Accra.
The Association is seeking a 30-minute meeting with the Finance Minister at the earliest possible date to address what it describes as an urgent matter for Ghana’s cocoa industry and the livelihoods of farmers nationwide.
