Ginger traders urge government to boost local production amid rising prices

Ginger traders in Ghana have appealed to the government to step up support for local production as rising prices and supply shortages make it increasingly difficult to obtain the commodity in sufficient quantities.

The traders say disruptions in supply have affected the availability of ginger on the market, forcing some businesses to turn to imports from other countries to meet consumer demand.

The situation has contributed to higher prices, with traders expressing concern that the rising cost of ginger is affecting purchasing decisions and placing additional pressure on households already struggling with the cost of living.

They are therefore calling for targeted government interventions to strengthen domestic ginger production, improve supply and address challenges affecting the commodity’s value chain.

According to the traders, supporting local farmers and improving the consistency of supply could help stabilise the market, reduce dependence on imported ginger and ease the pressure on traders and consumers.

They believe a stronger domestic production system would also help Ghana meet local demand more reliably and reduce the vulnerability of the ginger market to external supply disruptions.

The appeal highlights the need for measures to support local agricultural production as traders and consumers contend with rising commodity prices and supply challenges.
