Ghana’s Road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ghana has successfully secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after an impressive campaign during the qualifiers. The tournament, which will be hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will mark the Black Stars’ fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Ghana’s greatest World Cup achievement came in 2010 in South Africa, where the team reached the quarter-finals after progressing through the group stage and defeating the United States in the Round of 16. Their remarkable journey ended heartbreakingly against Uruguay, who prevailed in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The Black Stars are determined to make amends for their disappointing performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they failed to advance from a challenging group that included Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay. Following the departure of Otto Addo, the Ghana Football Association appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the national team. Queiroz brings a wealth of experience, having managed top national teams such as Colombia, Iran, Egypt, and South Africa, while also working with some of the world’s biggest clubs. His tenure with Ghana began with friendly matches against Austria and Germany, although the Black Stars suffered defeats in both encounters.

Despite those setbacks, Ghana heads into the World Cup with optimism and a talented squad. Key players expected to play important roles include Ernest Nuamah, Jordan Ayew, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Antoine Semenyo, Baba Rahman, Thomas Partey, Abdul Mumin, Mohammed Salisu, Gideon Mensah, Alexander Djiku, and goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi. While star midfielder Mohammed Kudus is currently sidelined with an injury sustained at club level, several local-based players have been given opportunities during recent friendly matches.

As part of their final preparations for the tournament, Ghana is scheduled to face Wales and Mexico in international friendlies. The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17. They will then take on England on June 23 before concluding their Group I fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

With a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents, Ghanaians are hopeful that the Black Stars can make a strong impression, progress beyond the group stage, and enjoy a memorable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
