TEMA, Ghana, 3rd October: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using political power to enrich its members, urging Ghanaians to remain vigilant about the party’s return to power.
According to him, the NPP must be held accountable for its record in government, particularly over the economic challenges he says the previous administration left behind.
Mr Koomson questioned why former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta left the country while the NPP continues to campaign to return to power.
“Why did Ofori-Atta run away from the country, yet the NPP still has the audacity to campaign to come back to power? To do what?” he asked.
His comments come ahead of the NPP’s upcoming Delegates Conference, which will determine the party’s new leadership.
Mr Koomson urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prepare itself for whoever emerges as the new leadership of the NPP after their Delegates Conference.
He said the NDC has been given a mandate by God and must use it to resist what he described as any “bad plans” by the opposition party.
The GFL Secretary General also argued that many Ghanaians are satisfied with the direction of the country under President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, although he acknowledged that some campaign promises have yet to be fulfilled.
He said the government needs time to address the challenges because, in his view, the previous NPP administration left the country in a difficult economic position.
Mr Koomson further challenged the NPP to facilitate the return of Mr Ofori-Atta to Ghana so that he can account for his stewardship as Finance Minister.
He argued that bringing the former minister back to face accountability would strengthen the NPP’s moral authority to criticise the current administration.
He maintained that political propaganda would not prevent him from speaking about what he considers the failures of the NPP, saying he would continue educating Ghanaians on the party’s record.
At the same time, Mr Koomson cautioned the NDC against losing touch with its grassroots supporters.
He urged the party’s leaders to listen to the concerns of their grassroots and avoid isolating themselves from party members.
According to him, political leadership is not only about providing financial support, and party officials should make time to engage members when they reach out to them.
He therefore appealed to NDC leaders to pick up calls from their grassroots supporters and engage them directly, stressing that maintaining strong links with the grassroots is essential to the party’s political fortunes.
