The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that the Black Stars will travel to Morocco for an international friendly against the Atlas Lions on Sunday, 4 October 2026, a fixture that slots neatly into the busy September-October FIFA window and serves as valuable preparation ahead of both nations’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaigns. The match will be staged at the Grand Stade de Tanger, also known as the Ibn Battuta Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00 local time in Morocco, equivalent to 18:00 GMT.
This encounter was arranged after Ghana’s originally planned friendly against Tanzania fell through, opening the door for the Ghana Football Association and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to finalise the meeting.
For Morocco, the game also became the fallback option after exploratory talks with Argentina failed to produce an agreement, largely because of scheduling and travel complications during the same window. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi later explained that he had wanted a World Cup participant as the final opponent and that Ghana fitted that brief perfectly.
The timing places the friendly at the end of an intensive three-week international period. Ghana open their Group C qualifying campaign with an away fixture against Côte d’Ivoire on 24 September before returning home to host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium a few days later. Morocco, meanwhile, begin their Group A programme by hosting Gabon in Rabat on 25 September and then travel to face Lesotho on 29 September.
Only after those competitive matches will both squads reconvene in Tangier for the non-competitive test. The extra game therefore gives coaches Carlos Queiroz and Mohamed Ouahbi a rare opportunity to rotate players, experiment with new combinations and evaluate form against high-quality opposition without the pressure of qualification points.
The fixture renews one of African football’s longer-running rivalries. The two sides first met in the 1962 World Cup qualifiers and have since crossed paths in World Cup preliminaries, Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and friendlies spanning more than six decades.
Recent history has favoured Morocco: the Atlas Lions won 1-0 in a friendly in Rabat in June 2021 and repeated the same scoreline in the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, Sofiane Boufal scoring the late winner. Ghana’s last victory over Morocco dates back to 2008, when goals from Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari secured a 2-0 win in Accra.
For Queiroz, now in his second spell with the Black Stars after guiding them to the 2026 World Cup, the match offers a chance to measure progress against a side that reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and remains among Africa’s strongest teams. For Ouahbi the game provides a platform to assess new call-ups and the depth of a squad still built around the core that performed so well in Qatar.
Ghana arrive with extra motivation. After missing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the four-time champions are determined to make a strong start to the 2027 qualifying cycle and to restore their standing on the continent.
A competitive showing in Tangier, even in a friendly, would send an early signal of intent. Morocco, already established as one of Africa’s leading sides, will use the occasion to fine-tune their approach after the two opening qualifier matches and to keep the squad sharp before club football resumes.
The Grand Stade de Tanger, a modern venue that has hosted significant international fixtures, is expected to provide a lively atmosphere as two of the continent’s most recognisable teams meet once again.
