Ghana Standards Authority raids fake mattress factory and warehouse in Dawhenya and Ashaiman

Officials of the Ghana Standards Authority, together with enforcement officers of the Ghana Police Service, have raided a mattress manufacturing company at Dawhenya known as 5A Homes over the alleged production of fake and substandard mattresses and stuffing furniture products.

The intelligence-led operation, supervised by the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Ghana Standards Authority, Clement Kubati, revealed that the company had resumed operations despite previously being identified and shut down over the production of substandard products.

According to officials, the company was operating without the necessary assessment, certification, and approval from the Ghana Standards Authority at the time enforcement officers arrived at the facility. Two Chinese nationals linked to the company were arrested during the operation and are expected to assist with ongoing investigations.

The enforcement team later extended the operation to the Ashaiman China Mall Warehouse, where large quantities of suspected substandard mattresses and electrical products, including light bulbs, sockets, plugs, and extension cords, were allegedly discovered, with some already displayed for sale at the mall.

Authorities subsequently closed down both the manufacturing facility and the warehouse as investigations continue into the operations of the businesses involved.

Mr. Kubati disclosed that the enforcement exercise, which began yesterday, will continue across various markets to identify and recall suspected substandard products already in circulation.

He further warned that individuals and companies found culpable would face sanctions, including fines and possible prosecution, as part of efforts to protect consumers and restore confidence in products on the Ghanaian market.

Mr. Kubati also urged the public to remain extremely vigilant and promptly report any suspected illegal manufacturing activities or substandard products to the Ghana Standards Authority to support ongoing enforcement operations.

According to the Ghana Standards Authority, the ongoing operation forms part of a broader nationwide crackdown on fake and unsafe products that pose serious health and safety risks to consumers.
