“Ghana Has Opened the Floodgates for All Manner of Reptiles to Enter” – Abraham Koomson

Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has called on the Ministry of the Interior to urgently address the presence of foreign national child beggars on the streets of parts of the country, including the capital, Accra.

He said the situation has persisted for years, warning that some of the children involved have grown up within that environment and may now be contributing to wider social and security challenges.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, 23rd May, Mr. Koomson claimed that some of these individuals are now adults and may be involved in criminal activities such as armed robbery.

“These street beggars on our streets started coming in not today and some could be 20 years now. Most of the names we hear involving armed robbery and other problems are not Ghanaians. Tracing them will not lead you to any family in Ghana,” he said.

He stressed the need for stricter border and immigration controls, arguing that Ghana’s system has become too open to unchecked entry.

“There should be stringent measures to handle these illegal people entering the country as Ghana has opened the floodgates for all manner of reptiles to enter the country causing problems and it’s very difficult to deal with them,” he added.
