“Ghana Has Moved from the 11th Biggest Economy in Africa to the 8th” – President Mahama

President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E John Dramani Mahama, has revealed that his administration has increased the value of Ghana’s non-traditional exports from $3.83 billion to approximately $5 billion within a little over a year in office.

According to the President, the country’s economy is expanding rapidly, with significant growth being recorded across several sectors.

Speaking during a community engagement at Ndewura Jakpa Senior High School as part of his two-day #ResettingGhana Tour of the Savannah Region, President Mahama stated that his government had also increased the size of Ghana’s economy from $80 billion to $114 billion.

“Now, our economy is expanding at a fast rate. At the time we took over, the total gross domestic product, the size of our economy, was just about $80 billion. Within one year and a few months, we have increased that size of the economy to $114 billion” he said.

President Mahama further disclosed that Ghana has improved its economic standing on the African continent, moving from the 11th largest economy to the 8th largest economy in Africa.

“And so today as I speak with you, Ghana has moved from number 11 biggest economy in Africa to number 8 biggest economy in Africa. And you can see it in all the sectors” he stated.

The President highlighted the growth in non-traditional exports as one of the strongest indicators of the economy’s expansion and resilience.

“And so today as I speak with you, Ghana has moved from number 11 biggest economy in Africa to number 8 biggest economy in Africa. And you can see it in all the sectors” he stated.

He continued by saying: “If you take non-traditional exports, at the time we came into office, the total value of non-traditional exports was $3.83 billion. In just a bit, about one year, we have moved the total value of non-traditional exports from $3.83 billion to about $5 billion. And so it shows that the economy is expanding, it’s doing well, because there’s been a 30.7% increase in non-traditional exports in one year”.

President Mahama noted that the gains made in the economy would enable government to invest more in citizens’ welfare, improve infrastructure, and create sustainable employment opportunities.

“And so this gives us the opportunity to be able to invest more in our people, to be able to create jobs, to be able to improve our infrastructure in our schools, in our hospitals, in agriculture, in roads, and that is what we’ve been hearing from the ministers” he said.
