The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has expressed concern over the rising number of new HIV infections in the Bono Region, with 1,145 new cases recorded between January and May 2026.
The Commission said the increase is largely affecting vulnerable populations, prompting renewed calls for the public to adopt safer sexual practices and undergo regular HIV testing.
However, the Bono East and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, said the Commission is intensifying the distribution of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a preventive medication that significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection among people at high risk.
According to the Commission’s data, the Sunyani Municipality recorded the highest number of new infections, with 222 cases, followed by the Berekum Municipality, which reported 184 cases. Other districts, including Jaman South, Wenchi and Tain, also recorded substantial numbers of new infections.
Mr Bambilla urged the public to avoid unprotected sex and know their HIV status through regular testing. He also encouraged people living with HIV to adhere strictly to their antiretroviral therapy, noting that consistent treatment suppresses the virus, improves health outcomes and significantly reduces the risk of transmission.
He stressed that early testing, timely treatment and sustained public awareness remain critical to curbing the spread of HIV in Ghana.
