ACCRA, Ghana, 26th August: Motorists using the Kaneshie enclave in Accra are set to experience major traffic diversions from September 7, 2026, as construction begins on a new underground stormwater drainage system along the Dr. Busia Highway.
The Project Coordinator of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, announced the arrangements during the launch of a media sensitisation campaign on the Traffic Management Plan for the project.
According to him, the first phase of the traffic management plan will involve the closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr. Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction.
The closure, which will run until the end of November 2026, will affect vehicles travelling from Korle Bu Mortuary Road, Graphic Road, Obetsebi Lamptey Circle and Kwame Nkrumah Circle towards Pamprom Junction, First Light Traffic Intersection and beyond.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Dr. Sarfo said affected motorists will be required to use alternative routes, including Awudome Cemetery Road, the News Times Corporation-Awudome Roundabout route and the Oblogo-Mataheko route to access First Light Junction.
He said the Pamprom Junction section is expected to reopen in the first week of December 2026 after completion of the first phase of the drainage works.
However, motorists will have to contend with further restrictions, as the westbound section of the Dr. Busia Highway from Kaneshie Station to the First Light Traffic Intersection will remain closed until August 2027.
Dr. Sarfo urged road users to avoid the affected corridors where possible and use the designated alternative routes to minimise congestion and inconvenience.
He also announced dedicated toll-free lines for enquiries, complaints and traffic-related information. The public can call 0800 800 900 or 0800 500 600 on the MTN network.
The GARID Project is also working with Telecel Ghana to activate toll-free access on its network before the commencement of the road closures.
