The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has dismissed two car park workers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) over allegations of extorting money from travellers, as part of efforts to eliminate the practice and improve passenger experience.
The Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, disclosed the development during a visit by Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation to the airport on Tuesday. She explained that the company took the decision after receiving repeated complaints from passengers and conducting investigations that led to the identification of the two workers.
According to Mrs. Opare, the workers were dismissed about two weeks ago immediately after the investigations confirmed their involvement. She stressed that the company would not tolerate any form of misconduct that undermines the image of the airport or inconveniences passengers.
“We’ve had two people expelled from the airport in the car park workers who asked passengers for money. Because we were able to identify the specific people involved, we had them leave the airport immediately,” she stated.
The GACL Managing Director reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing travellers with a safe, efficient and seamless airport experience. She noted that management would continue to strengthen monitoring and supervision across the airport to prevent extortion and other forms of unacceptable behaviour.
Mrs. Opare also appealed to passengers and members of the public to report any incidents of extortion or inappropriate conduct by airport personnel. She said public cooperation would enable the company to take swift disciplinary action against offenders and improve accountability within the airport.
The dismissal of the two workers forms part of GACL’s ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery, uphold professionalism and maintain the reputation of Kotoka International Airport as Ghana’s premier aviation gateway.
