Tragedy has struck the community of Ayanfuri in the Diaso District following the sudden death of Nana Kwabena Okyere, Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, who allegedly shot himself accidentally with a pump-action gun during a funeral ceremony on Friday, May 9, 2026.
According to police reports, the unfortunate incident occurred during the funeral rites of Abusua Panyin Akwasi Kwateng.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the chief sustained a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen after the firearm reportedly discharged accidentally.
He was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency medical treatment but sadly succumbed to his injuries while receiving care.
The body of the deceased chief has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary pending further investigations by the police into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The shocking incident has thrown the Ayanfuri Traditional Area into mourning, with residents and mourners left devastated by the tragic loss of the respected traditional leader.
