Five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon Air cargo plane overshot the runway while attempting to land at Miami International Airport in the United States.
The aircraft, operated by 21 Air, was travelling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it overran the runway at about 2 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airport said the Amazon Prime Air flight, identified as Flight 7598, came to a stop at the north-western end of the airport after overrunning a diagonal runway.
Images and videos from the scene showed thick black smoke billowing from the aircraft as emergency services responded to the incident.
Following the crash, Miami International Airport temporarily closed all runways and taxiways, while a ground stop was also put in place.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was deployed to the scene to deal with the emergency and attend to those affected.
Amazon said it was working closely with local authorities and officials to establish exactly what happened.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the aircraft overshooting the runway, while emergency teams continue to assess the situation.
