ACCRA, Ghana, 20th July: Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that a revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Junior High School (JHS) has been completed and will be formally presented to the Ministry of Education this week.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister revealed that the new curriculum will introduce subjects such as coding, artificial intelligence (AI), electronics, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as part of efforts to equip Ghanaian students with 21st-century skills.
“As I speak to you, one of the most significant decisions we took as government was to revise our education curriculum, and the agency responsible is NaCCA .They were asked to revise our education curriculum from kindergarten to junior high school. I’m happy to note that on Wednesday, a revised curriculum for all pupils from kindergarten to junior high school will be presented formally to the Ministry of Education for onward submission to the President and for the policy to go to Cabinet and Parliament.”
He explained that the revised curriculum is designed to strengthen the country’s Smart Start agenda through greater integration of technology, science, engineering, and mathematics into basic education.
“The revision of our curriculum is to ensure smart start curriculum for greater integration of technology, science, engineering, and mathematics. We have promised to introduce coding, electronics, artificial intelligence, and TVET into the basic education curriculum. And this will be the new addition.”
Hon. Iddrisu further disclosed that the revised curriculum places significant emphasis on ethics, patriotism, and civic responsibility to help nurture responsible and disciplined citizens from an early age.
“And more importantly, ethics, ethical values. How the child grows up, knowing what is state resources, knowing how to be patriotic and responsible, and knowing how to be civic responsible will be an integral part of our revised curriculum.”
The Education Minister also highlighted government’s efforts to improve funding for basic education through increased capitation grants and the timely release of funds to beneficiary schools.
“And therefore, at the basic education level, we have done some spending, improving capitation grants, and ensuring that it’s released timely. We have made some payments to beneficiaries of over 5,681,000.”
