Dumsor: ECG needs to controlled by the private sector….ACEP

Executive Director for Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Benjamin Boakye has said that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) should be controlled by the private sector to ensure smooth running of operations.

According to him, the current intermittent power outages in the country popularly called “DUMSOR” is plunging the nation into economic hardship which needs a critical attention to salvage the situation before it gets out of hands. He is of the view that the ECG owes about $10m to West Africa Gas Pipe Line (WAPCO) which for this reason they have decided not supply us gas for the production of the electricity.

The situation is not properly treated as it should be because you cannot ones awhile drop in $2m out $10m and you expect to get supply for this reason we should allow private sector to run the affairs of ECG in order not to plunge the nation into total darkness.

He revealed that the National Petroleum Cooperation (NPA) cannot be faulted for not settling the owed WAPCO by the ECG because as and when they get money that they can pay but the money is not coming. “He stated.
