A Senior Revenue Officer at the Accra International Airport Preventive Unit, Comfort Dedaa Omari, has urged passengers arriving in Ghana to understand the customs procedures and declaration requirements at the airport to avoid difficulties.
Speaking in an interview on the Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show on Ahotor 92.3 FM on Friday, September 11, 2026, with host Nana Dogbe, she explained that passengers arriving in Ghana are required to provide information about items and amounts of money they are bringing into the country when requested by customs officials.
According to her, the airport operates two main customs channels—the Green Lane and the Red Lane.
She explained that passengers who use the Green Lane are declaring that they have no goods, cash, or other items requiring customs declaration or payment of taxes. Those carrying items that require further checks or taxation are expected to use the Red Lane.
Comfort Dedaa Omari further noted that certain categories of passengers and imported belongings may qualify for tax exemptions. She mentioned religious missionaries and charity organisations bringing items into Ghana for their operations as examples.
She also explained that Ghanaians who have lived outside the country for more than one year and are returning permanently may receive exemptions on certain personal belongings, including household furniture and other effects, although such items remain subject to customs checks.
The Senior Revenue Officer, however, cautioned travellers that some items are prohibited from being brought into the country, while certain goods, including some alcoholic beverages, may attract customs duties and taxes.
She therefore encouraged travellers to familiarise themselves with customs requirements and make the appropriate declarations when arriving in Ghana.
