An education expert, Charles, has called for a review of Ghana’s Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), saying the system has not been reviewed as expected.
He said the CSSPS was expected to undergo reviews after some years, but unfortunately, the country appears to be holding on to the programme, with no review in sight.
According to him, this is the right time to reflect on the CSSPS because the system has led to interference in the school placement process and resulted in creating a situation where parents find it difficult to get placements for their wards.
He also raised concerns about alleged underhand dealings in the placement process. He said some people are willing to pay money to get their children into schools of their choice but keep quiet as long as they get what they want.
He described the situation as a call for the highest leaders to act, saying some people are undermining the system and the placement process.
The education expert further said some people discussing the system do not have a historical understanding of how it works.
He explained that, under the selection system, students who choose a school as their first choice should normally get that school if their performance is good, except when the number of applicants exceeds the available places.
However, he said some people now undermine the process by doing whatever it takes to get their children into particular schools, meaning placement is sometimes not based on performance.
He therefore called for a review of the CSSPS to make the system fairer and ensure that students are placed based on merit.
