The Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association (GNACFA) has called for the immediate payment of outstanding arrears owed to cocoa farmers, warning that delays could negatively affect cocoa production and bean quality ahead of the 2026/2027 crop season.
The appeal follows reports that some farmers have not received full payment for cocoa supplied to Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) since the beginning of the year. The LBCs have attributed the delays to liquidity challenges and the late release of funds by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).
The National President of the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association, Stephenson Anane Boateng, said the continued delay in settling farmers’ payments is causing anxiety within the cocoa sector.
He warned that if the arrears are not fully cleared before the commencement of the 2026/2027 cocoa season, many farmers may be unable to invest in essential farm inputs, leading to lower productivity and poorer bean quality.
Mr. Boateng explained that although he could not immediately state the total amount owed to farmers, the outstanding payments remain a major concern for cocoa producers across the country.
He noted that cocoa farming requires substantial financial investment throughout the season, adding that delayed payments make it difficult for farmers to purchase agrochemicals, fertilisers and other essential inputs needed to maintain their farms.
According to him, the situation could ultimately affect Ghana’s cocoa output and reputation on the international market if urgent steps are not taken to address the payment backlog.
He therefore called on the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to expedite the release of funds to enable Licensed Buying Companies to settle all outstanding debts owed to farmers before the next cocoa season begins.
Mr. Boateng stressed that ensuring prompt payment to cocoa farmers is critical to sustaining production, improving bean quality and protecting the livelihoods of thousands of farming households across the country.
