Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Obenewaa Ocloo has called on residents across the region to take greater responsibility for keeping their communities clean as government intensifies efforts to address sanitation challenges.
The Minister said the success of the “Keep Accra Clean” agenda would require collective responsibility from government, local authorities, the private sector and citizens.
According to her, government has a responsibility to provide leadership, while the private sector must contribute investment and innovation, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) must enforce sanitation standards.
She also stressed the need for citizens to take ownership of the communities in which they live.
Hon. Ocloo made the remarks following a working visit to key waste management facilities operated by the Jospong Group of Companies across the Greater Accra Region.
She joined the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, for the exercise, which included visits to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), Achimota Waste Transfer Station and Jamestown Waste Transfer Station.
The delegation assessed systems for waste collection, transfer, treatment, recycling and resource recovery, while also engaging in discussions on investment, innovation and partnerships.
Hon. Ocloo said waste management should not be viewed simply as an exercise to keep streets clean, arguing that effective sanitation was critical to protecting public health, restoring dignity to communities, safeguarding the environment and creating economic opportunities.
She acknowledged the scale of the sanitation challenges facing Greater Accra but maintained that they were not insurmountable.
“We must be bold enough to embrace technology, innovation, investment and effective partnerships,” she said, while stressing the importance of stronger coordination among central government, the Regional Coordinating Council, MMDAs and the private sector.
The Regional Minister said the “Keep Accra Clean” agenda was “not merely a slogan” but a deliberate commitment to building a cleaner, healthier, safer and more dignified Greater Accra.
“Together, we can transform our approach to sanitation and make clean communities the standard, not the exception,” she added.
