“Child Welfare Is a Moral Imperative, Not a Choice” – Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has stressed that prioritising child welfare is not merely a legal obligation but a moral imperative and a sound investment in Ghana’s future.

Speaking at the close of a two-day retreat organised by the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) in Senchi, the Vice President said government has begun implementing strategic, child-centred reforms aimed at improving the well-being and protection of children across the country.

She highlighted the Care Reform Roadmap as a key initiative, noting that Ghana is deliberately shifting from institutional care to family-based alternatives. This transition, she explained, includes strengthening inspection regimes and expanding foster care systems to ensure children grow up in safer and more nurturing environments.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the reforms are long overdue and reflect government’s commitment to placing children at the heart of national development planning.

She called on government agencies, civil society organisations, the private sector, development partners, and local communities to work together to guarantee that every Ghanaian child grows up safe, healthy, and well-educated.

The Vice President cautioned against allowing children to become the centre of political or institutional conflicts, stressing that such disputes do not serve the best interests of the child or contribute meaningfully to their development.
