Black Stars Problems Run Deeper Than Coaching – Sammy Kuffour

Former Ghana defender Sammy Kuffour has weighed in on the ongoing challenges facing the Black Stars, emphasizing that the team’s issues extend far beyond the choice of coach. “For me, it is not about the coach,” he stated clearly. “Whether we like it or not, we have already signed him. Critics here and there will not help.”

In his view, the problems within Ghanaian football are systemic and deeply rooted, going well past individual coaching decisions. He stressed that with the deal already signed for the new Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, continued criticism and debate at this stage will not be productive. Instead, Kuffour called for unity and full support behind the incoming coach as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and beyond.

Kuffour’s comments come amid a period of reflection for the Black Stars, who have struggled to recapture their past glory despite frequent changes in coaching staff. He pointed out that focusing solely on who is in the dugout overlooks broader structural challenges, such as player development pathways, administrative issues, and the overall organization of football in the country.

By shifting the conversation away from the coach, Kuffour hopes to encourage a more constructive approach that addresses these underlying factors while giving the new technical team the backing it needs to succeed.

This perspective reflects a wider sentiment among some former players and analysts who argue that Ghanaian football requires comprehensive reforms rather than quick fixes through coaching hires.

As the Black Stars look ahead, the message is clear: unity and patience could be key to turning things around on the international stage. Do you agree with Sammy Kuffour that the real work lies deeper than the coaching role?
