The Black Princesses of Ghana have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after a heavy 4-0 defeat to France in their final Group C match on Saturday, 12 September, at ArcelorMittal Park in Sosnowiec.
What began as a contest that still offered Ghana a realistic path toward the knockout rounds for the first time in the team’s history ended in a second-half collapse that left the side bottom of the group with three points and confirmed an eighth successive group-stage exit since their debut at the competition in 2010.
Ghana entered the fixture knowing that a draw would at least keep qualification hopes alive after they had revived their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Korea Republic in their second match. That earlier win, which featured goals from Sarah Nyarko, Ivy Osei Owusu and Ruth Amponsah, had followed an opening 3-0 loss to Ecuador and ended a long winless streak at the tournament.
Head coach Charles Sampson made a single change for the France game, bringing Latifa Abesik in for the injured Esther Asamoah, and his side started with purpose. Early in the first half Priscilla Mensah thought she had given Ghana the lead, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The teams went into the interval locked at 0-0, Ghana having matched the European side for long stretches and shown the organisation that had served them well against Korea.
The second half told a different story. France increased the tempo and found the breakthrough in the 54th minute through Clara Bertrand. Justine Rouquet added a second in the 69th minute, then converted again after Ornella Graziani had made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 81st minute following a handball by Ruth Amponsah.
Rouquet completed her brace in the 86th minute to make the final score 4-0. The French side finished top of Group C and advanced as group winners, while Korea Republic took second place after beating Ecuador 3-2 in the other match. Ecuador finished third on three points, level with Ghana but ahead on the relevant ranking criteria, leaving the Black Princesses last.
The result extends a familiar and frustrating pattern. Since first appearing at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2010, Ghana have now failed to progress beyond the group stage on eight consecutive occasions. Across 24 matches in the competition they have recorded only six wins. The latest campaign produced one victory, two defeats, three goals scored and eight conceded.
France will now face Canada in the round of 16. For the Black Princesses the tournament is over.
