President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Upper West Region that the government will progressively extend the Big Push road programme to feeder roads connecting communities once major trunk roads have been completed.
He said the government’s immediate priority is to improve the major highways linking regional capitals and other key areas before moving deeper into communities and towns.
President Mahama made this known during an inspection of the Wa-Han road project as part of his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.
He explained that the selection of projects under the first phase of the Big Push was guided by the need to prioritise roads that form critical links within the national road network.
According to him, the Wa-Bolgatanga road was selected because of its importance as a link between the Upper West and Upper East regional capitals.
President Mahama acknowledged concerns from residents who want roads in their various communities constructed immediately, but said government’s limited financial resources required a phased approach.
He said the Big Push Phase One was currently being implemented, while the government is already scoping projects for Phase Two, with a third phase also expected.
“As we move forward, we will progress from the trunk roads to the feeder roads that connect with the trunk road network,” he said.
The President explained that completing the trunk roads first would allow residents from different constituencies to gain access to major highways and enjoy safer and more comfortable journeys.
“After the trunk roads are completed, we will extend the feeder roads into our communities and towns,” he added.
He said the strategy was intended to create a properly connected road network rather than undertake isolated projects without links to major highways.
President Mahama further assured the people of the Upper West Region that government would continue to identify and prioritise additional roads as resources become available.
He said the completion of the major roads would provide the foundation for subsequent investments in feeder roads across the region.
