The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a suspension of campaign activities in constituencies nationwide where it has sitting Members of Parliament (MPs).
The directive, according to the party, is in solidarity with the Minority Caucus’ fight against the controversial Constitutional Instrument (CI) the Electoral Commission is seeking to lay before Parliament.
Dubbed Operation Save Our Democracy, the directive will be in force from March 7 to March 31, 2023.
This was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, and addressed to all constituency chairmen.
The statement explained the decision was taken at a Functional Executive Committee meeting held on Tuesday, March 7.
Aside from the suspension of campaigns, all sitting NDC MPs shall be required to attend all Parliamentary sittings with no member to undertake any travel that will affect his or her attendance in Parliament.
Reacting to this on Ahotor 92.3 Fm’s Morning show ‘Ade Kyi Mu Nsem’, the Member of Parliament for Prestea-Huni Valley Constituency in the Western Region Robert Wisdom Cudjoe said it will be difficult for the Member of Parliaments but the directive is in the right direction as they need all their numbers in Parliament to fight against the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) the Electoral Commission is seeking to lay before Parliament.
Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe told Citizen Kofi Owusu that it will be appropriate for the first time MPs on the ticket of the NDC in Parliament to be protected to not to be contested.
He said a first timer in Parliament can’t learn how Parliament works in four years, so in order for the NDC to get strong representatives in Parliament, the first time MPs must not be contested.
