Deputy Majority Leader in the parliament of Ghana, Alexander Afenyo Markins has kicked against the anti-gay bill known as the 2021 Promotion of Proper Sexual Right and Family Values Bill which is set to tighten laws against members of the LGBTQ+ community.
According to him, he does not think that somebody claiming to be a lesbian or gay should go to jail by virtue of that.
His comment comes after the Catholic church called on Ghana’s parliament to rethink of the decision and the bill before its passage.
According to the church, they do not support the LGBTQ+ act but some concepts in the bill are too harsh and it will affect humanity when passed.
Speaking to the media in parliament monitored by @Ahotoronline.com, the Member of Parliament for the Effutu constituency in the Central region said, he supports what the church is saying because he is also a catholic and cannot say something different from what the church has already said.
He has not left the catholic church yet and the church is saying that it will be wrong to criminalize somebody’s sexual orientation and so be it.
