Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a lecturer at Cape Coast University, has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reconsider engaging John Mahama in a debate.
According to Dr. Otchere, the recent media engagement by Mahama at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra demonstrated that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would struggle to win a debate against him.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s morning show ‘Adekyee Mu Nsem’ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Dr. Otchere, a political analyst, emphasized that Dr. Bawumia poses little threat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when it comes to economic discussions.
He argued that the Vice President’s economic policies have failed to produce positive results, thus undermining his credibility among voters.
“Dr. Bawumia’s economic theories have not yielded any positive outcomes,” Dr. Otchere stated. “Engaging John Mahama in a debate would not be advantageous for the NPP.”
Dr. Otchere further suggested that the ruling government’s attempt to seek a debate with the opposition leader is an unusual strategy.
Typically, it is the opposition that seeks to capitalize on the ruling party’s popularity, not the other way around.
“The ruling government seems to be seeking popularity from the opposition, which is quite uncommon,” he noted. “If Dr. Bawumia wants to debate John Mahama, he should reconsider after witnessing Mahama’s media engagement.”
On Sunday, John Dramani Mahama, the NDC Presidential Candidate, addressed journalists in Accra. Dr. Otchere praised Mahama’s ideas, describing them as impressive and well-conceived.
