Mahdi Jibril, Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Akufo-Addo of lying about resolving the Dumsor power crisis. He claimed that the Electoral Commission’s (EC) need for generators for the limited registration contradicts the president’s claims.
Despite the EC’s assurance of securing generators for registration, Mahdi Jibril distrusted them. The EC, led by Chairperson Jean Mensa, announced this plan to ensure a smooth limited voter registration exercise starting on May 7, 2024, across Ghana.
Jean Mensa assured the public during a press briefing that measures were in place to prevent disruptions caused by power outages, known as “dumsor.” She explained that the commission arranged for generators at all district offices to maintain continuous voter registration services.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM‘s morning show ‘AdeKyee Mu Nsem‘ with host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Mahdi Jibril emphasized the importance of safeguarding votes starting from the limited registration exercise. He called on everyone to participate in the registration to oust the ruling NPP party from power.
The upcoming registration aims to enroll approximately 623,000 first-time voters nationwide. It will occur in all 258 district offices of the commission, with an additional 785 centers established for accessibility. Additionally, 25 public universities will serve as registration venues.
