James Enu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Tema West Parliamentary seat, didn’t hold back his criticism of President Akufo-Addo’s recent move to rename the AMERI Power Plant to the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant.
The AMERI Power Plant came into existence back in 2015 through a build-own-operate and transfer agreement, aiming to contribute a hefty 250 megawatts to Ghana’s energy grid. This hefty boost was intended to address the nation’s pressing need for more electricity.
The original deal stipulated that Ghana would assume complete ownership of the power plant after fulfilling a payment of 510 million within a span of five years.
However speaking on Accra-based Ahotor 92.3 FM, Mr. Enu didn’t mince words in expressing his discontent with the decision to not only rename but also relocate the plant to Anwomaso, situated in the Ashanti Region. He deemed this move both impractical and financially burdensome.
