Constitutional lawyer Kwame Adofo is urging the Nungua Traditional Council to respect the supremacy of the constitution, as it stands as the ultimate authority over all laws in Ghana.
Adofo highlights that the queen mother of the Nungua Traditional Council, Naa Ayemuede, is not yet 18 years old, and the constitution expressly prohibits girls from marrying before reaching this age.
On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, leaders of the Nungua Traditional Council made a late-night appearance at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra. Their objective was to demand the release of their 16-year-old queen mother, Naa Ayemuede.
Currently, the teenager is under the protection of the state following her betrothal to a 63-year-old priest.
The Traditional Council leaders assert that their 16-year-old queen, Naa Ayemuede, is being detained at the hotel. They demand her immediate release to facilitate certain customary rites.
In an interview on Ahotor 92.3 FM, Kwame Adofo reiterated that the leadership of the Nungua Traditional Council should respect the constitution and allow it to fulfill its role.
