UEFA Champions League: Man City win first title to seal historic treble

Manchester City ended a sensational season by beating Inter Milan 1-0 to win the Champions League for the first time and complete the treble on a Saturday evening of frayed nerves.

On Saturday night, the English side created history to become the second English club after Manchester United to win the elite treble with a win over Italian giants Inter Milan to lift the UEFA Champions League 2022-23 in Istanbul. With this historic feat, Pep Guardiola’s team have become the eighth European club to win a continental treble.

Spanish midfielder Rodri broke the deadlock against Inter in the 67th minute of the high-octane clash with a drilling effort from just inside the penalty area, giving Manchester City the much-needed goal to secure the historic treble.

Inter almost levelled at the death when a point-blank header by substitute Romelu Lukaku was saved by Ederson.

Before the break, City lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury and had to battle hard for the opening goal before almost immediately giving up an equaliser. Romelu Lukaku forced an Ederson save and Federico Di Marco struck the crossbar with a header.

It was far from a fluent City performance against a tireless Inter side that looked capable of causing a shock. But City, who lost in the final two years ago against Chelsea, would not be denied.

Earlier this month, Manchester City lifted the FA Cup 2022-23 after registering a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at the iconic Wembley Stadium. On May 21, Manchester City won the Premier League title for the fifth time in six seasons after Arsenal’s defeat at Nottingham Forest left Pep Guardiola’s men with an insurmountable four-point lead at the top of the table over the Gunners.

City manager Pep Guardiola has now won the Champions League three times and took his trophy count with City to 12.
