The Second Deputy Majority Whip and Member of Parliament for Bia East, Richard Acheampong, has rejected suggestions that newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga could be intimidated or overwhelmed by the Minority in Parliament.
Mr Acheampong said Mr Agalga possesses the parliamentary and government experience needed to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus and effectively manage the demands of the position.
His comments follow concerns raised by former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, who suggested that Mr Agalga’s lack of previous experience in top parliamentary leadership could make him vulnerable to pressure from the Minority.
Mr Acheampong, however, dismissed the concern as political talk, arguing that Mr Agalga has been active in Parliament and understands the procedures and dynamics of the House.
According to him, Mr Agalga previously served as a Deputy Minister for the Interior and currently chairs Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, positions he said have equipped him with significant experience in governance and parliamentary affairs.
He also pointed to Mr Agalga’s contributions to parliamentary debates, particularly on legislative instruments, as evidence of his competence and preparedness for the Majority Leader position.
Mr Acheampong said Mr Agalga is therefore not someone the Minority can easily intimidate or overpower on the floor of Parliament.
He congratulated Mr Agalga on his appointment and pledged the support of the Majority leadership as he takes up the new responsibility.
Mr Acheampong expressed confidence that the NDC parliamentary caucus would fully endorse the appointment when Parliament resumes, saying he had not heard any negative comments from members of the caucus regarding the decision.
He said the Majority leadership would work closely with Mr Agalga to maintain unity within the caucus and ensure that the NDC effectively carries out its parliamentary responsibilities.
Mr Agalga’s appointment forms part of changes within government and the parliamentary leadership following President John Dramani Mahama’s recent ministerial appointments.
