Aduana FC Stun Asante Kotoko 4-2 on Penalties to Reach MTN FA Cup Quarterfinals

Aduana FC delivered a stunning upset in the MTN FA Cup Round of 16 on Sunday, February 8, 2026, eliminating defending champions Asante Kotoko with a 4-2 victory on penalties following a tense, goalless draw in regulation time.

The highly anticipated clash unfolded at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where Kotoko—known as the Porcupine Warriors—were expected to advance comfortably as title holders.

However, Aduana, also referred to as the Aduana FC stood firm defensively and frustrated their hosts throughout the 90 minutes, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to convert any into goals despite a competitive and chance-filled encounter.

The drama began early when Asante Kotoko were awarded a penalty just minutes into the game—around the 6th minute—after a foul in the box. Captain and key defender Samba O’Neil stepped up to take the spot-kick, aiming to give his side an immediate lead and settle the nerves of the home crowd.

Unfortunately for Kotoko, his effort was saved by the Aduana goalkeeper, who guessed correctly and denied the skipper from 12 yards. This miss proved pivotal, as it prevented Kotoko from taking control early and set the tone for a tightly contested match where neither team could find the breakthrough despite numerous attempts.

The match remained locked at 0-0 after full time and extra time was not required in this single-leg tie format, forcing a penalty shootout that showcased Aduana’s superior nerve and accuracy from the spot.

While Asante Kotoko converted only two of their attempts, Aduana calmly slotted home four to seal the dramatic win and send the home crowd into stunned silence. The result marks a significant early exit for Kotoko from the competition they entered as defending champions, putting increased pressure on head coach Abdul Karim Zito, who afterward called for patience as the club continues its rebuild.

This victory represents a major statement from Aduana FC, a two-time Ghana Premier League champion known for their resilience and fighting spirit. They now carry strong momentum into the quarterfinals, where they are set to face Techiman Liberty Youth.

Techiman earned their spot in the last eight with a convincing performance in their Round of 16 tie defeating Real Tamale United 3-0 at the Ohene Ameyaw Park—setting up an intriguing matchup as Aduana aims to continue their cup run and potentially go deep in the prestigious MTN FA Cup.

The Round of 16 produced several other notable results, including advances for teams like Berekum Chelsea, Heart of Lions, Dreams FC, Medeama SC, Nations FC, and Attram De Visser, ensuring a competitive quarterfinal lineup filled with surprises and high stakes.

For Aduana, knocking out the giants has boosted confidence, while Kotoko must now refocus on their domestic league campaign amid growing scrutiny over their form.
