Abraham Koomson Defends President Mahama’s Use of Brother’s Private Jet, Cites Safety Concerns

TEMA, Ghana, 28 March: The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has defended President John Dramani Mahama over criticisms surrounding his use of a private jet owned by his brother instead of the official presidential aircraft.

According to Mr. Koomson, the President’s decision is driven primarily by safety considerations, insisting that it would be unwise for him to rely on an aircraft that is reportedly not in good condition.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, March 28, he stated that the current presidential jet is unfit for use and should not be considered for official travel until it is properly replaced or upgraded.

He maintained that until the state acquires a new and more reliable aircraft, President Mahama is justified in continuing to use his brother’s private jet.

Mr. Koomson further argued that the President should not be pressured by critics to risk his safety by flying in what he described as an old and faulty jet.

He added that the government must remain focused on its governance agenda and not be distracted by what he termed politically motivated criticisms from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He also stressed that the President has every right to use a private jet if necessary, even on a regular basis, particularly when it ensures efficiency and security in the execution of his duties.

Taking a swipe at the opposition, Mr. Koomson suggested that if the NPP is genuinely concerned about the country’s progress, it should prioritise accountability.

He specifically called for the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to answer questions regarding his tenure in office.
