Akufo-Addo’s Office Slams Fabricated Herald Lie on Mahama Plea

The Office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has fired back forcefully against a report in the Herald Newspaper, branding it as completely baseless and a product of pure invention. In a detailed rejoinder released on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the office rejected allegations that Akufo-Addo plans to meet President John Dramani Mahama to secure safe passage for ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. The statement leaves no room for doubt, declaring the story  utterly false and insisting that no such request explicit or implied has been made to Mahama or his representatives.

This rebuttal comes amid swirling rumors in Ghanaian media circles, where the original Herald piece painted Akufo-Addo as  troubled  and desperate for an audience with his successor. Dismissing the narrative outright, the former president’s team emphasized his rock-solid adherence to democratic values and the rule of law.  Nana Akufo-Addo’s fidelity to the Rule of Law has never been in question, the statement declared, underscoring a commitment that transcends personal ties.

While the office acknowledged Akufo-Addo’s genuine concern for Ofori-Atta rooted in family bonds and years of close professional partnership during two terms in office – drew a firm line. Personal worry, they stressed, does not translate into meddling with legal accountability.  That concern does not extend to wanting to interfere with the rule of law, the rejoinder clarified, aiming to quash any speculation of backroom deals.

In a pointed call to action, the office demanded that the Herald and other outlets that amplified the story publish the full rejoinder verbatim. This move invokes the former president’s rights under media ethics guidelines, signaling intolerance for unchecked fabrications. As Ghana navigates its post-election transition, this episode highlights the high stakes of accurate reporting in preserving public trust amid political tensions.
